A key match took place between two unbeaten teams, No. 3 seeds and defending champions Ricardo Santos and Emanuel Rego of Brazil and Sean Rosenthal and Jacob Gibb of the United States on Monday afternoon (August 18). After comfortably winning the first set, the US duo appeared to be heading for a straight-sets win. However, the German pair battled fiercely in the second set, and the US duo just managed to scrape through the second set with a close score of 25-23.
Klemperer and Koreng were unsuccessful in their attempt to cause another upset after beating No. 1 seeds Wu Penggen and Xu Linyin of China in the round of 16.
In the other quarterfinal match Monday morning, Olympic debutants, the Georgian pair Jorge Terceiro and Renato Gomes, upset the fifth-seeded Richard Schuil and Reinder Nummerdor of the Netherlands in straight sets 21-19, 21-19. This was the second upset caused by the Georgian duo, with the first one being their 2-1 vicotry over dark horses Clemens Doppler and Peter Gartmayer of Austria in a round of 16 match.
The No. 4 seeds Fabio Magalhaes and Marcio Araujo of Brazil advanced to the semifinals by beating the No. 24 seeds Florian Gosch and Alexander Horst of Austria 2-0 (22-20, 21-17)
Ricardo and Rego will go head-to-head with their Brazilian compatriots Magalhaes and Araujo in a semifinal game on Wednesday, while Georgian duo Terceiro and Gomes will face US duo Dalhausser and Rogers.
